1. Introduction: Your All-in-One Solution for Remote Environmental Monitoring
Deploying reliable environmental monitoring in remote or off-grid locations presents a significant challenge. Honde Technology solves this with a complete, integrated system designed for easy deployment and real-time data collection. The system features a compact multi-parameter weather station and precision soil sensors that connect to a LoRa data collector. This collector wirelessly transmits all sensor readings to a 4G LoRa gateway, which then sends the data to your server using the efficient MQTT protocol. This setup provides a robust, end-to-end solution for any remote monitoring project.
2. Unpacking the Modular IoT Monitoring System
A modular IoT environmental monitoring system is a set of interconnected electronic components designed for remote and precise data collection in outdoor or industrial environments. This system by Honde Technology is engineered for easy deployment and real-time monitoring, allowing you to combine different sensors to meet specific project needs. The components work together seamlessly to form a comprehensive data acquisition solution.
3. A Deep Dive into the System’s Core Components
The system is composed of three primary hardware elements: the weather station, soil sensors, and the wireless data hub.
3.1 The Integrated Compact Weather Station
This custom-made, all-in-one weather station integrates multiple environmental sensors into a single, compact unit. All sensor data is output through a single RS485 connection, simplifying installation and wiring.
| Sensor Parameter | Technology / Type |
| Solar Radiation | Integrated Sensor |
| Rainfall | Optical Sensor |
| Wind Speed & Direction | Ultrasonic Sensor |
| Air Temperature | Integrated Sensor |
| Air Humidity | Integrated Sensor |
| PM10 | Integrated Sensor |
Note: The optical rainfall sensor is protected by a cover for shipping, which must be removed before deployment.
3.2 Precision Soil Moisture & Temperature Sensors
The system includes two-in-one sensors that accurately measure both soil moisture and temperature. To facilitate data collection from multiple locations, each sensor can be assigned a different address (for example, number two and number three), allowing the data collector to poll each sensor individually.
3.3 The Wireless Data Hub: LoRa Collector & 4G Gateway
Data transmission is handled by two dedicated wireless components:
- LoRa Collector: This unit gathers data from up to three connected sensors. It features three waterproof connectors for easy, tool-free connection and a single LoRa antenna to transmit the collected data to the gateway. The collector uses red (positive) and black (negative) wires for its power supply. Two additional wires (yellow and green) are present for other configurations but are not needed in this standard setup, simplifying the installation process.
- 4G LoRa Gateway: The gateway receives data from the collector and sends it to a server using a cellular connection. It is equipped with two antennas (one for LoRa and one for 4G), supports the MQTT protocol for efficient data transfer, and includes a simple 4G SIM card slot for communication.
4. System Setup: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide
As specialists in this hardware, we’ve ensured the system is pre-configured for rapid deployment. Follow these five straightforward steps to get your monitoring station online.
- Connect the Sensors: Use the waterproof connectors to plug the weather station and soil sensors into any of the three available ports on the LoRa data collector. There is no required order.
- Power the Collector: Connect the red (positive) and black (negative) wires to your power supply for the LoRa collector and install its antenna.
- Prepare the Gateway: Insert a compatible 4G SIM card into the LoRa gateway using the provided tool to eject the card tray. Ensure the APN of the SIM card matches the configuration we provide for successful communication.
- Power the Gateway: Attach the two antennas (one for LoRa, one for 4G) to the gateway and plug in the 12-watt DC power adapter.
- Go Live: Because the gateway is pre-configured with your server details, the system begins transmitting data immediately upon receiving power. Once both the collector and gateway are powered on, the system will automatically begin sending data directly to your server via the MQTT protocol.
