A batch of high-precision automatic weather stations built with China’s assistance have been successfully put into operation in agricultural demonstration zones of several African countries. This project, as an important outcome under the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, aims to utilize advanced meteorological monitoring technologies to assist African farmers in addressing the challenges of climate change and ensuring food security.
These newly built weather stations are different from traditional simple equipment. They belong to wireless weather stations and are equipped with solar panel power supply systems, which can work stably in remote areas with vast land and sparse population and scarce electricity. The sensors integrated within the station can collect key agricultural meteorological data such as temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, precipitation and solar radiation in real time.
“In the past, we relied entirely on experience and the weather for farming. Now, my mobile phone can receive warning text messages from the weather station,” a farmer in Zambia said in an interview. “For instance, when I receive a reminder of insufficient precipitation, I can start irrigation in time to prevent a reduction in crop yields.” Knowing that the wind speed is too high, the greenhouse can be reinforced in advance.
The technical experts from the project’s Chinese side introduced that these real-time data, after being aggregated through data loggers, not only directly serve farmers but are also uploaded to the cloud for the construction of a regional meteorological monitoring network. This helps local governments to conduct more accurate weather forecasts and climate trend analyses, providing a scientific basis for formulating national-level agricultural drought resistance and flood control policies.
The successful implementation of this project marks that China-Africa cooperation is deepening from traditional infrastructure to high-tech and digitalized “green cooperation”. By sharing technologies and experiences, China is taking concrete actions to support the African continent in enhancing its capacity to address climate change, strengthening the resilience of agricultural production, and jointly safeguarding food security in Africa.
