The newly-built meteorological stations facilitate climate monitoring and disaster early warning in Southeast Asia

To address the increasingly severe threats of climate change and natural disasters, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) recently announced the construction of multiple new meteorological stations in the region to enhance meteorological monitoring and disaster early warning capabilities. This measure aims to enhance the response speed to extreme weather events and ensure the safety of people’s lives and property.

The newly-built meteorological stations will be distributed in countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Malaysia. It is expected to help collect meteorological data in real time, including information such as precipitation, temperature, humidity and wind speed. The meteorological station is equipped with advanced meteorological monitoring equipment and will be connected to the meteorological departments of other countries via the Internet, forming a regional meteorological information sharing network.

The Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations stated: “The impact of climate change on Southeast Asia is becoming increasingly evident. Frequent floods, typhoons and droughts are seriously affecting agricultural production and people’s lives.” The construction of new meteorological stations will enhance our early warning system, enabling countries to respond more effectively to meteorological disasters and provide timely information services to residents.

According to the analysis of meteorological experts, the frequency of extreme weather events caused by climate change in Southeast Asia has been on the rise in recent years. For instance, in 2023, many countries in Southeast Asia suffered from severe flood disasters, causing huge economic losses. Through the new meteorological monitoring network, countries are expected to grasp weather changes earlier, thereby taking preventive measures and reducing the risks and losses caused by disasters.

In addition, this project will also promote scientific and technological cooperation at home and abroad and advance the progress of meteorological scientific research.

At the unveiling ceremony of the meteorological station, the director of the Indonesian Meteorological Agency said, “We are very glad to be able to participate in this regional meteorological monitoring network.” This is not only an improvement of our country’s meteorological facilities, but also an enhancement of the disaster prevention and mitigation capabilities of the entire Southeast Asia region.

With the commissioning of meteorological stations, Southeast Asian countries are looking forward to better addressing future climate challenges and promoting sustainable economic development. The government departments call on all sectors of society to jointly pay attention to climate change, actively participate in disaster prevention and mitigation work, and work together to create a safe and green living environment.
