The first thing you’ll notice about the Tempest is that it doesn’t have a rotating anemometer to measure wind like most weather stations or a tipping bucket to measure precipitation. In fact, there are no moving parts at all.
For rain, there is a tactile rain sensor on top. When water droplets hit the pad, the device remembers the size and frequency of those droplets and converts them into rainfall data.
To measure wind speed and direction, the station sends ultrasonic pulses between two sensors and tracks these pulses.

All other sensors are hidden inside the device, which means that nothing wears out from exposure to the elements. The device is powered by four solar panels that are located around the base, so there is no need to replace batteries. In order for the station to transmit data, you will need to connect to a small hub in your home, but as for the station itself, you won’t find any wires.
