Thailand prepares for potential flooding during rainy season

The government has reported significant progress in disaster prevention efforts across various regions, emphasizing preparations for potential flooding during the 2024 rainy season.
Radklao Inthawong Suwankiri, Deputy Government Spokesperson, announced that Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, has instructed the Provincial and Bangkok Metropolitan Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command Centers to gear up for the upcoming rainy season. Anutin emphasized the importance of adhering to the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Act and the National Water Resources Office’s measures for the rainy season.
Key actions include monitoring weather conditions, developing flood response plans, inspecting water retention and drainage facilities, and issuing timely warnings.
Provincial centers are instructed to establish command centers at both provincial and district levels, mobilize local leaders, volunteers, and residents to monitor critical areas, deploy rapid response teams to assist affected communities continuously, and report flood situations and impacts to the central command center for evaluation and policy decisions.
The Bangkok center is tasked with monitoring weather and flood conditions, coordinating with relevant agencies, and informing the public. They will also inspect and clear drainage systems and water retention areas, prepare personnel and equipment for immediate response in flood-prone areas, and collaborate with neighboring provinces to address and prevent flooding.
These efforts aim to ensure effective flood prevention and response, safeguarding both residents and key economic zones.
